SAINT PAUL (February 28, 2012) – The top seeds all
advanced to the semifinals in the opening round of the
O’Brien Cup Playoffs last weekend. Many of the games
were closer than the scoreboard indicated, and they needed the
mini-game to decide things in Adrian.
The Lady Bulldogs grabbed four points on the final weekend of the
regular season to earn a home playoff series; home ice proved to be
crucial. UW-Stevens Point stole game one 3-0, but Adrian won
game two 4-3 in overtime and then won the mini-game 1-0 in overtime
to take the series.
The semifinals and final will be played in River Falls as the
top-seeded Falcons swept UW-Eau Claire in the quarterfinals.
UW-River Falls will play Lake Forest in the semifinals. The
Foresters defeated St. Scholastica by a pair of goals in each game
last weekend.
UW-Superior beat St. Norbert 5-2 and 5-3 to take its opening
series. The Yellowjackets will face three-seed Adrian.
There’s sure to be plenty of excitement this weekend in
River Falls. Of the eleven title games in the Women’s
Conference’s history, all but one has been decided by two
goals or less. The championship has gone to overtime four
times, including last year’s thriller between Adrian and
UW-River Falls. The game has been decided by one goal seven
times.
UW-Superior and Adrian will compete in game one of the semifinal
round; game two features UW-River Falls and Lake Forest. The
winners will play on Saturday. All games will be played at
Hunt Arena in River Falls.
