Adrian College junior Kelsey Kusch (Jr., F - St. Clair Shores, Mich.) is the NCHA Women’s Offensive Player of the Week and Concordia University Wisconsin junior Emily Heckendorf (Jr, D - Merrill, Wis.) is the NCHA Women’s Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Kusch is the NCHA Offensive Player of the Week after helping the 10th-ranked Bulldogs to a weekend sweep of Augsburg College, claiming victories of 5-1 Friday and 8-1 Saturday. Kusch scored six points in the two wins, starting with one goal and one assist in the opener. She followed that up with two goals and two assists in game two that upped her season totals to 14 goals and 10 assists with a rating of +11.
Heckendorf is the NCHA Defensive Player of the Week after nearly leading the Falcons to a weekend sweep of St. Benedict. She played well in the opener as CUW claimed a 3-1 victory, with the defense allowing just that one goal and limiting the Blazers to an 0-for-4 showing on the power play. Then, on Saturday, it was her offense that was on display when she set a school record with four points (2G/2A) in a single period.
The Falcons were down 4-1 in the third period when she scored her first to make it 4-2. After falling down 5-2, Heckendorf netted another power play goal and assisted the next in a four-minute span before finally setting up a fourth goal in the game’s final seconds of the 6-5 loss.
Five teams in all were back in action in the New Year last week, with St. Norbert claiming a 3-1 victory over No. 5 Stevens Point and Lake Forest topping St. Mary’s, 6-5. All schools are back this week for more non-league competition, with 15 different games over six days of action.
