ADRIAN, Mich. — The Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) is deeply saddened by the passing of Concordia University Wisconsin Athletic Director Dr. Rob Barnhill, a transformative leader whose vision, integrity, and dedication reshaped Falcons athletics over a career spanning more than two decades.
Dr. Barnhill took the helm of the Concordia Wisconsin Department of Athletics in the spring of 2001, ushering in remarkable growth across personnel, programs, and facilities. A cornerstone of Dr. Barnhill’s enduring legacy was his pivotal role in ushering in a dynamic new era for CUW through the addition of men’s and women’s ice hockey. Recognizing the growing demand and impact of collegiate hockey, he spearheaded the launch of the programs, elevating Concordia Wisconsin's presence on the regional and national stage.
To support this ambitious vision, Dr. Barnhill championed a partnership for the expansion of the Ozaukee Ice Center. The addition of a new, state-of-the-art second sheet of ice—designed primarily to serve Falcon hockey athletics—provided CUW student-athletes with a top-tier home facility and cemented the university's commitment to competitive excellence on the ice.
"Rob was one of the strongest advocates for the NCHA in the West region and his steadfast support for student-athletes was unmatched,” said NCHA Commissioner Jim Olson. “His incredible sense of humor and dedication stood out in a group of people. Rob was often called upon to lead challenging conversations and had a unique ability to bring people together and accomplish a task.”
“Dr. Barnhill was a man of integrity,” Olson continued. “He made everyone around him better, and he was a fierce advocate for the NCHA, as well as his beloved Concordia Wisconsin Falcons. Rob worked tirelessly to ensure that all felt included and supported. He will be missed by all who knew him."
Dr. Barnhill was a respected voice within the NCHA, where his leadership and advocacy earned him deep admiration from peers across the region.
"Dr. Rob Barnhill represented the best in college athletics: education, integrity, and making a meaningful impact on the next generation of leaders. The NCHA extends heartfelt prayers and condolences to his wife, family, and everyone in the Concordia University Wisconsin community," said Adrian College President Jeff Docking.
Dr. Barnhill’s unwavering care for student-athletes, coaches, and staff leaves an indelible mark on Concordia University Wisconsin and the NCHA.
Above all his professional accomplishments, Dr. Barnhill was a devoted husband and father. He deeply loved his wife, Stephanie, and their two sons, Ty and Caden.
