DUBUQUE, Iowa - St. Norbert College men's hockey coach Tim Coghlin reached a rare milestone when the Green Knights topped the University of Dubuque 7-3 in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association game at ImOn Arena.
The victory moved Coghlin to a 687-187-61 record in his 32-year coaching career, an even 500 games over the .500 mark. He is the first NCAA Division III men's coach to hit that milestone at any point, and joins the late legendary Michigan State coach Ron Mason (924-380-83, 544 games over .500) as the only two to ever hit that plateau at any level of men's college hockey.
The Green Knights got off to a good start, taking a 2-0 lead by the midway point of the first period. Braydon Beahm rung up his fourth goal of the young season with a power-play marker at 6:27. Gustav Portillo followed at even-strength at 9:52 for a 2-0 lead. Dubuque clawed a goal back on Owen Hardy's score at 13:35.
St. Norbert scored the lone goal of the second period when Calvin Hanson found the cage at 9:02, with the 3-1 lead holding up into the middle of the third period.
T.J. Koufis gave St. Norbert a 4-1 lead with a power-play goal at 10:15 of the third period. Dubuque would suddenly respond to cut its deficit to 4-3, with Maksim Lakic and Nikita Borodayenko scoring at 13:12 and 15:16, respectively. Dubuque would be whistled for a penalty just 20 seconds later, with Hanson cashing in on the power-play chance to bump the lead to 5-3. The Spartans continued to head to the penalty box down the stretch, with Hanson posting a hat trick with a 5-on-3 power-play goal at 18:45 and Ethan Byrne a power-play marker of his own at 19:08 to close out the scoring.
Hanson added an assist to finish with a four-point game. Koufis had one goal and two assists for a three-point outing. Beahm and Portillo had one goal and one assist for two points. Dayton Deics, Jack Christen and Jackson Rilei all had two assists apiece.
St. Norbert outshot Dubuque 36-21. Hunter Garvey made 18 saves for the Green Knights, who finished the game 5-for-8 on the power play. Dubuque was 1-for-5 on its power-play opportunities.
