GENEVA, Ill. — Behind a breathtaking three-goal surge in just 46 seconds and a masterful 36-save performance from goaltender Matt O'Donnell, Aurora defeated Saint John’s, 6-1, on Saturday in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament.
The Spartans (24-5-1) advance to the national quarterfinals for the second consecutive season, setting up a March 21 showdown at Endicott.
The game’s decisive turning point came midway through the third period. Leading 2-1 in a tightly contested battle, Aurora ignited a highlight-worthy offensive explosion. Conor Ronayne began the onslaught at the 9:07 mark. Only 14 seconds later, Jacob Brockman struck for an unassisted goal, followed just 32 seconds after that by another unassisted tally from Lukas Sedlacek. The flurry of three goals in 46 seconds transformed a one-goal nail-biter into a rout.
While the offense provided the fireworks, O'Donnell provided the foundation. The Aurora goaltender turned away 36-of-37 shots, including a staggering 18 saves in the third period alone. O'Donnell’s performance in the final frame stifled any hope of a Johnnies comeback as Saint John's desperately outshot the Spartans 18-8 during the period.
The scoring began late in the first period when Aurora's Jakson Kirk scored with only 13 seconds remaining. Saint John’s (17-7-4) leveled the game at 1-1 at 6:02 of the second period on a power-play goal by Jordan Newpower. However, the Spartans regained the lead for good less than two minutes later when Andrew Schultz netted the eventual game-winner.
Jake Code added a final exclamation point with an empty-net power-play goal at 17:04 of the third.
Saint John’s goaltender Jon Howe made 27 saves in the loss. Despite the lopsided final score, the Johnnies outshot the Spartans 37-33, but they were unable to overcome O'Donnell’s brilliance or the Spartans' mid-period blitz.
The victory marks a historic step for the Aurora program, which has now won an opening-round NCAA game in back-to-back seasons.
