Men's Hockey Harris Cup playoff scenarios

Aurora needs two points to win its first Peters Cup

ADRIAN, Mich. — Aurora needs two points to clinch its first-ever Peters Cup (regular season champion). The top four seeds will host a quarterfinal game. There are many scenarios that will play out over the weekend to determine who will be in the tournament.

Below are Harris Cup playoff scenarios for each team.

Aurora
Aurora has already clinched a home first-round playoff series and needs just two points in the regular-season finale series with Dubuque to lock up its first No. 1 seed for the Harris Cup playoffs. In the event of a three-way tie at 41 points between Aurora, SNC and Trine; Aurora would finish second. The Spartans would lose out to St. Norbert in the three-team mini-conference with the Green Knights garnering nine points to Aurora’s six, and Trine would be third with three points. If Aurora and Trine were to finish in a tie, the Spartans own the tiebreaker over the Thunder because of the head-to-head series. If Aurora and St. Norbert finish in a tie at 41 points, then the Spartans fall to the second seed because of the head-to-head series.

St. Norbert
St. Norbert has already locked up a home first-round playoff series and will finish the regular season anywhere between first and third. The Green Knights take on Lawrence in a home-and-home series with just a one-point lead over Trine for the No. 2 seed. The Green Knights hold the tiebreaker over Trine with a better record vs. the top-four ranked teams if the two teams end up tied in the standings. The Green Knights can clinch the No. 2 seed by getting at least five points from Lawrence this weekend.

Trine
Trine has clinched a top-four spot and a home first-round playoff series. The Thunder can finish second, third or fourth in the standings as they head into a marquee showdown series with Adrian to close the regular season. Trine clinches at least the No. 3 seed with just one point in its series with the Bulldogs. If Adrian sweeps all six points from Trine, the Bulldogs would claim the No. 3 seed with the head-to-head record tiebreaker and slide the Thunder down to the fourth seed. Trine needs to finish with more points than St. Norbert to move up to the No. 2 seed.

Adrian
Adrian has clinched a top-four spot and a home first-round playoff series. The Bulldogs have the simplest path out of any team to determine their playoff seeding. Adrian must take all six points from Trine in its season-ending series this weekend and then they would tie the Thunder with 35 points and hold the head-to-head tiebreaker to move up to the No. 3 seed. Anything less, the Bulldogs will be locked into the No. 4 seed.

Lawrence
Lawrence enters the regular-season finale series with St. Norbert, leading a pack of five teams separated by just three points in the standings that could all finish as high as fifth, or be the first team out of the playoffs in ninth place. The Vikings have 20 points and need three points to clinch a playoff spot. Lawrence holds the tiebreaker over Lake Forest by the head-to-head tiebreaker (5-1 points). The Vikings are the lone team among the five fighting for the last four playoff spots without a win vs. a top-4 team in the standings. A regulation victory would clinch a spot in the Harris Cup Playoffs.

MSOE
MSOE comes into the season finale sixth in the standings with 19 points. The Raiders can finish anywhere from fifth to ninth in the standings and will take on Lake Forest in a crucial series between two teams fighting for those last four playoff spots. A regulation victory or any combination of three points would clinch a playoff spot for the Raiders. MSOE holds the tiebreaker over Marian in the head-to-head series (4-2 points). The Raiders currently have the best record of the five non-clinched teams against the top four teams with a 1-5-1 record and would have an upper hand in any multi-team tiebreakers that couldn’t be broken from head-to-head or mini-conference amongst tied teams results.

Marian
Marian comes into the final weekend in seventh place with 18 points. The Sabres’ season is on the line with a home-and-home showdown against Concordia Wisconsin. It’s mathematically impossible for Marian and CUW to finish in a tie in the standings. Marian can clinch a playoff spot with three points with a regulation win or a combination of an overtime or shootout victory.

Concordia Wisconsin
Concordia Wisconsin has 17 points and is tied for eighth in the standings. The Falcons have the tiebreaker over Lake Forest because of a regulation victory earlier in the season over St. Norbert, which is the determining factor in the tiebreaking process. Concordia Wisconsin needs four points from its series with Marian to clinch a playoff spot, or the Falcons need to finish tied or better than the number of points Lake Forest has to clinch a playoff spot.

Lake Forest
Lake Forest is on the outside looking at the race for the Harris Cup playoffs. The Foresters have 17 points, but lose a tiebreaker with Concordia Wisconsin and is one point behind seventh-place Marian. Lake Forest needs four points or more from its series against MSOE to clinch a playoff spot. If MSOE, Lake Forest and Concordia Wisconsin all finished tied with 21 points, Lake Forest would win the tiebreaker with seven points in the mini-conference followed by Concordia Wisconsin with six and MSOE with five. If Lawrence, Lake Forest and Concordia Wisconsin all finished with 20 points, Lake Forest would be the team left out with just four points in the mini-conference to Lawrence’s eight and Concordia Wisconsin’s six.

Dubuque
Dubuque has been eliminated from Harris Cup playoff contention entering the final weekend of the regular season.
